Eligibility Criteria
Before you decide to have a breast lift, it is important to think carefully about your expectations and discuss the anticipated results at your consultation.
Whilst my patients have found that the breast lift procedure may improve their appearance and self-confidence,* you should have realistic expectations of how long your breast lift will last.
Ideal candidates for a breast lift include those who:
- Have “B” or “C” cup breasts. I have found that breast lifts performed in larger and therefore heavier breasts, have the potential to not last as long.
- Are above the age of 18. There is no upper age limit.
The breast lift operation is a day procedure, performed under general anesthetic or conscious sedation, depending on the size of the breast.
The operation takes 90 minutes.
I mark your breast tissue before you go to sleep, to identify where the nipple will be re-positioned.
On completion, your breasts will sit back up on your chest and be dressed. During the operation, I often remove a very small amount of breast tissue to shape the breast. This is sent to be tested.
Please pay careful consideration to the following:
- You must avoid consuming alcohol for a week prior to the procedure.
- You must not take anything that may thin your blood in the two weeks prior to the procedure.
This includes the following:
- Anything with aspirin such as Grandpa, Anadin, Dispirin, some cold and flu medications and combination pain killers. You may take Panado.
- All multi vitamins, vitamin supplements, omegas, fish oils and green tea.
After the procedure, you are taken back to the ward.
- When you have awoken, eaten and any pain assessed, you are able to return home.
- You must wear a supportive bra 24 hours a day for three months, to help internal healing and to achieve a longer lasting result.
- You will be given painkillers, instructions and advice to rest at home.
- You will have swelling and bruising afterwards, which can vary from one side to the other but in general, most patients find they have very little pain a week after the procedure.
- You can drive a car after 7 – 10 days.*
RISKS
Don’t be shy about discussing your concerns at your consultation. It is important that you feel comfortable talking to me.
- There is a small chance that you will lose feeling in your nipple.
- A patient may very rarely, although uncommon, develop a hematoma,* which is bleeding from the wound. It is for this reason that prior to the procedure, you must not take any blood thinning substances.
- As with any operation, there is a small risk of infection. In most cases, this will respond well to antibiotics.
EXPECTATIONS
- You may feel an average amount of pain; similar to the pain and discomfort of breastfeeding or if your muscles get very stiff after a heavy gym workout.
- Before you decide to have a breast lift, it is important to think carefully about your expectations and discuss the anticipated results at your consultation. Whilst the procedure may improve your appearance and self-confidence, you should have realistic expectations of how long your lift will last. Those with bigger / heavier breasts and those with stretchy tissue are most likely to see their breasts droop earlier than hoped.
- It’s natural to feel some anxiety, whether it’s excitement for your anticipated new look or stress about the operation. Don’t be shy about discussing these feelings at your consultation. It is important that you feel comfortable talking to me.
